Online Dating Safety For Over 70s
Online dating can actually be safer than meeting a stranger at the pub, because you can chat for as long as you like before deciding to meet. A little common sense goes a long way. Here are our tips for staying safe, online and off.
Staying Safe Online
- Trust your gut. If something does not feel right, you do not owe anyone an explanation. Stop replying, or use the Ignore button.
- Be honest in your profile and expect the same in return. It is hard to pass for 65 when you walk in at 75.
- Check your photos do not give away your address, your car numberplate or anyone else in your family.
- Keep personal details such as your home address, phone number and where you bank to yourself until you truly know someone.
- Never send money, gift cards or bank details to someone you have met online, however sad the story. This is the classic scammer move.
- Do not let anyone rush you into sharing more photos or information than you are comfortable with.
- Be wary of anyone who declares undying love before you have even met. Real feelings take time.
Meeting In Person
When you are ready to meet, a little planning means you can relax and enjoy yourself:
- Meet somewhere public and busy, such as a cafe, a club bistro or a shopping centre food court, for the first few dates.
- Tell a friend or family member who you are meeting, where and when, and what time you expect to be home.
- Make your own way there and back, and do not accept a lift home on a first date.
- Take your mobile, fully charged, and agree a code word with a friend in case you want an excuse to leave early.
- Go easy on the drinks so you keep a clear head, and never leave your glass unattended.
- If you ever feel unsafe, leave, ask staff for help, or call 000 in an emergency.
Your date is probably just as nervous as you are, so be kind, take it slowly and have fun.
